^Train ride on an early morning.
Packing for a family city break gets boring for me most of the time. 😀 I am not the type to organize things very well so whenever we travel, the day before is so stressful for me. I’m in that predicament now. We’ve planned on going somewhere near than to visit the Philippines. The travel distance that takes about 14 hours is just too much, not to mention the plane fare for 5 people isn’t really cheap. Comparing the budget, the plane fare alone would be enough for a 5-day-stay at any Tuscany Villas.
So our target will be Fürth and Nürnberg again, to visit grandpa and granma, and Playmobil, too. We’ll be leaving in a few hours from now and I’m still awake…
So before I finalize packing everything, and before packing gets boring, let me point out some Tips When Packing For A Family City Break. Useful things to consider when stuffing a luggage for you and your kids.
Table of Contents
Pack in a Stretch
Pack in a long stretch of days, not overnight. Listing all that you need to bring will also be helpful especially for your kids’ stuff. Make sure to look at the weather forecast, so you can pack appropriate clothing and avoid buying overseas.
Easy to Tow
Choose luggage that would be easy to tow and heave if need be. And do not fill them to the brim, it’s somehow to get a feel of travelling easy with packing just what is necessary.
Label
Don’t put your kids’s names on luggage. We use tags that they can easily identify. Pokemon tags like this are the ones the kids have for a long time.
Separate Backpacks
Our kids had always carried a backpack or sidebag anywhere we go. – Even when it’s just at a grocery store. It would have some of their toys, a bottle of water, a shirt when it’s hot and a wallet – with their emergency contact details (easily accessible phone numbers).
Pack some undies, shirt, socks and perhaps a small sketchpad, and pencils especially if your kids like to draw (our daughter got that skill from hubby).
Different kids, different needs, so they say. So make sure that the kids’ backpacks are personalized. Our eldest boy has asthma, so having inhaler in his bag is a must. There might also be Sudoku books – like a compilation of them to keep his busy mind from rusting off to not doing anything.
In the photo, our daughter preferred to bring a messenger bag. This might be inconvenient at some point, but she can easily get things from it from her side. It’s also nice to make them choose. And it’s Hello Kitty, what’s not to love? 😉
Snacks and Drinks
Sudden hunger can attack a bored child. No, not really, but munching on something is somehow a way to ease the boredom that 2 or 5 hours or more could bring. Also, a bottle of water or a croissant cost more in flight, or on trains than from a regular shop.
Cheese packs, salami sticks, and any protein snack are what we recommend to bring. Also worth mentioning would be medicine. For us, C always has his inhaler in his bag.
Some Toys
Card games like UNO are easy to pack and fun to play with the whole family. A rubik’s cube is also a good option and challenges your kid to think. A PSP or a Nintendo DS is another option, but let’s keep this to a minimum. Or if you do not allow these consoles at home, it is alright to use when travelling.
Instructions
Kids need to know safety. This is something that we have done as a drill even when it’s just going around Vienna. The usual : don’t walk too far away, what to do when left behind while walking, while in the train, should be discussed and repeated to them over and over before and during the trip.

same here, am not so good with packing…terribly boring and time-consuming! hopefully, when the kids get older sila nalang pack ng gamit nila. lol. but for now, ako muna choose what they wear, bring the basic necessities, milk, bottles, and diapers for the two-year old, and what-have-you! 😀
enjoy the trip and the vacation, G!
I know it might sound weird, but I actually really enjoy packing! I always make a list of all of the things I plan to bring, and then when I get home I make sure to lay them all out and always make a game out of trying to fit as much into my suitcase as possible without exceeding the weight limit. Have you tried listing? It’s really helpful!! 🙂
